When the arts inspire businesses: Museums as a heritage redefinition tool of brands

2018

International audience; While the literature has mainly considered brand museums as communication tools or complex retail environments, this article analyses them through a heritage framework and suggests that brands can use heritage technologies of the arts for their own purposes. The case study of the brand museum of the Laughing Cow highlights the heritage technologies the brand uses to endorse two heritage roles: an inter-generational memory role based on the transmission of the brand's history and a community representation role through spaces and objects. As a consequence, this research sheds light on how brands can come to be accepted as heritage objects. By using heritage technologi…

Politics of tangibility, intangibility, and place in the making of a European cultural heritage in EU heritage policy

2016

The EU has recently launched several initiatives that aim to foster the idea of a common European cultural heritage. The notion of a European cultural heritage in EU policy discourse is extremely abstract, referring to various ideas and values detached from physical locations or places. Nevertheless the EU initiatives put the abstract policy discourse into practice and concretize its notions about a European cultural heritage. A common strategy in this practice is ‘placing heritage’ – affixing the idea of a European cultural heritage to certain places in order to turn them into specific European heritage sites. The materialisation of a European cultural heritage and the production of physic…

Industrial Mining Tourism Activities

2010

INTRODUCTIONThe diversification of local sources of income is considered to be one of the main paths to achieving development in certain spaces which, due to their special, depressed situation, need a means of economic reactivation. Tour-ism can be considered to provide an effective and complementary method of achieving development as it combines local synergies, fosters employment and improves the standard of living of the residents of these zones. There-fore, tourism has become one way of addressing the socio-economic problems faced by rural areas, and some zones have used tourism as a method of miti-gating problems related to industrial decline (Arwell and Llurdes i Coit 1996; Hospers 20…
